Gynecomastia Surgery — Everything You Need to Know
What is gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is the enlargement of breast tissue in males. It is more common than most people realise, and far more treatable. It can affect one or both sides of the chest, and often causes not just physical discomfort but significant self-consciousness — especially when it comes to wearing fitted clothing, swimming, or simply feeling at ease in your own body. The condition can occur during puberty, with ageing, as a side effect of certain medications, or sometimes without any clear cause at all. That is completely normal and nothing to be ashamed of.
Can it be treated without surgery? In early stages, medication or addressing an underlying cause can sometimes help. However, once the glandular tissue has matured and firmed up, medication has very little effect. At that point, surgery is the only reliable and permanent solution.
Recovery — what to expect
Recovery is typically smooth and most patients are surprised by how quickly they return to normal life. Here is a simple guide to what we see in our practice:
Days 1–3: Rest at home. You will feel some soreness around the chest, which is completely expected.
Day 7: Most patients are comfortable returning to a desk job or college.
Day 14: You can resume driving.
1 Month: No restrictions at all — you can return to the gym, sports, and full physical activity.
A compression garment is worn during recovery to support healing and reduce swelling. We guide you through everything at your follow-up visits.
Will it come back?
This is one of the most common questions we hear — and the reassuring answer is no, for the vast majority of patients. Once the glandular tissue is removed in a fully matured adult, it does not regrow.
We typically wait until a patient is 18 before performing surgery, by which point hormonal fluctuations from puberty have settled and the results are far more lasting.
Two things are worth being aware of: first, if gynecomastia has an underlying cause such as a medication or hormonal condition, we identify and address that before surgery — which is why a proper evaluation is always part of our process. Second, significant weight gain after surgery can increase fatty tissue in the chest area. The gland itself does not return, but fat can accumulate. Maintaining a stable weight protects your results. For a well-evaluated patient who maintains their weight, recurrence is simply not a concern.
Cost of Surgery
Liposuction + Sedation (Local Anaesthesia): ₹75,000
Liposuction + General Anaesthesia: ₹95,000
With Skin Excision (required in select cases): ₹1,40,000
Skin excision is rarely needed and only recommended when there is a significant amount of excess skin that liposuction alone cannot address. We will always discuss which option is right for you during your consultation.
EMI options are available, making it easier to plan your treatment without financial stress.
Side effects & safety
Gynecomastia surgery is a well-established and safe procedure, particularly when performed under local anaesthesia. That said, as with any surgery, it is important to be aware of the following:
Infection: Uncommon, and managed effectively with antibiotics when it does occur.
Haematoma (blood collection): Uncommon. In most cases, this can be managed without a return to the operating theatre.
Scarring: Incisions are small and well-placed. Scars typically settle well and become barely noticeable over time.
We take every precaution to minimise these risks, and you will always have direct access to us if you have any concerns after your procedure.
Where are we?
We are based in Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram), Kerala. If you would like to book a consultation or simply have a question before deciding, please feel free to reach out — we are happy to help you understand whether this is the right step for you.
