RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY
Our ability to function can get affected by processes such as trauma, burns, developmental abnormalities, and malignancy. Impairment of function can mean the inability to gainfully contribute to society. Reconstructive surgery deals with the functional restoration of the body. Since functional impairment can involve anywhere from the scalp to the toes, the span of reconstructive surgery is vast. Because of this reconstructive surgery is not organ-specific.
A large part of this specialty relates to tissue healing and scar management. Our methods at reconstruction keep improving as our knowledge of these topics become better. This leads to better functional and aesthetic restoration.

- It begins with a need for improvement of the affected part. It is usual for individuals to consult their friends and relatives for input. In many cases, the cases are referred to a plastic surgeon by a primary physician or a specialist.
- It is followed by a consultation. It is recommended that the individual come prepared with data relating to previous treatment and medications. This includes investigations such as nerve conduction studies, x-rays and, other imaging studies. Patients should reveal any allergies and co-morbid conditions.
- Depending on the findings and, expectations of the individual, various treatment options are discussed. For example, it is possible to treat a condition with more than one technique. It can range from conservative, non-surgical, or surgical treatment. The differences in the risks, recovery, and outcomes are discussed with the patient.
- Sometimes a review consultation is scheduled with fresh investigations. It is usual for some individuals to discuss the option with their relatives and weigh the options. In those scheduled for surgery, pre-anesthetic evaluation is arranged.
- As in other types of surgery, the procedures can range from daycare surgery to more extensive procedures that require prolonged hospitalization. In some cases, the procedure is divided into parts and staged.
- Patients are discharged once they can manage themselves with the help of a friend or relative at home. Patients are required to come for regular follow-ups. The importance of follow-up can't be overemphasized. During this period patients are also initiated on physical therapy.
