HAND TUMORS
Tumors refer to swellings can be benign or malignant. Hand tumors are common and most of these tend to be benign in nature. They can arise from the skin, remaining soft tissue such as ligaments, tendons, nerves, vessels, and bones. The commonly seen presenting symptoms of hand tumors include swelling, pain, abnormalities in movements and sensation.
How are hand tumors managed?
Depending on the clinical findings additional investigations such as ultrasound and CT scan may be requested. In some cases, a needle aspiration cytology may be performed to ascertain the cell type.
Treatment depends on the type of swelling. In some long-standing benign conditions, it may be sufficient to keep them under observation.
Most of these swellings are excised under local or regional anesthesia as a daycare or short stay procedure. In cases which require complex reconstruction patients are admitted for a longer duration. The swellings may be sent for a tissue diagnosis after excision. Further management depends on the tissue diagnosis.
What are ganglions?
Ganglions are the most common swellings found in hand. They can be found in persons of all ages. They are most commonly found in the dorsum of the wrist. Ganglions usually present as a firm oval or round swelling. They may be associated with pain or discomfort. Treatment of ganglion varies from observation to surgical removal. Aspiration of the ganglion provides relief but is associated with chances of recurrence. Surgical ganglion removal is a day care procedure.
Other commonly found hand tumors include, lipoma, giant cell tumors, glomus tumors etc.
