EYELID CORRECTION ( BLEPHAROPLASTY )

Blepharoplasty is cosmetic surgery to improve the appearance of eyelids to give it a more youthful look. It is also undertaken for correction of some functional problems like dryness of eyes. It corrects the various signs of aging around eyes. This can be undertaken for the upper or lower lid or both.

What are the signs of aging around eyes?
These include the following.
  1. Tired appearance.
  2. Loose folds of the upper lid. In severe cases it may obstruct the visual field partially.
  3. Bags of the lower lid
  4. Apparent 'lengthening' of the lower lid.
  5. Puffiness of the eyelids.

Who is a good candidate for blepharoplasty?
You are a good candidate if
  1. You are bothered about the aged appearance of your eyelids.
  2. You do not have any serious condition affecting the eyes.
  3. Are in good health and do not have any serious coexisting illness.
  4. Have reasonable expectations about the procedure.
  5. You do not smoke.

What are the steps involved in undergoing eyelid surgery?
These are as follows.
Preoperative consultation. During the consultation, you must be able to convey your aesthetic goals. You must be prepared to reveal any other illness affecting eyes and rest of body, history of medications, herbal supplements, and previous eye treatments. We will be able to guide you about the treatment options and possible outcomes, risks and recovery. You may be advised additional tests to assess your fitness to undergo the procedure. An ophthalmologist consultation is also obtained prior to the procedure. Any doubts regarding the procedure are welcome. Smokers should stop smoking for at least two weeks prior to the procedure.
Procedure. Blepharoplasty can be carried out under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. This depends on the comfort level of patient and the extent of surgical steps involved. Incisions are placed in the upper lid crease. Excess skin is removed. Excess fat may be removed or re-positioned to give rise to a crisp look. Lower eyelid incisions are placed under the lash or within the conjunctival sac. The fat pads are re-positioned and the supporting tissues of the lower eyelid are strengthened. Incisions are closed with sutures and tapes.
Recovery: You should have a responsible adult to take care of you after the procedure. Patients are usually sent home the same day or the next. Patients are advised taking medications to control pain and reduce the chance of infection. Initially, there may be itching at the incision sites. Dryness is treated with the help of lubricating drops or gels. You should not rub the eyes after surgery. The post-operative swelling subsides to give rise to the new appearance.

What is the cost of blepharoplasty?
The cost of the procedure is the sum total of anesthesia charges, hospital charges, medications, investigations and surgeon fees.

Are there other procedures to rejuvenate the area around eyes?
A brow lift is a cosmetic surgery procedure to lift the sagging eyebrows. Sometimes the sagging of the forehead significantly contributes to the aged appearance of the eyes. In such situations, you will be advised a brow lift prior to eyelid correction.

Are the results of blepharoplasty long lasting?
Yes. They are technically permanent and last a long time.

Asian blepharoplasty

This is a cosmetic surgery procedure for the creation of a eyelid crease in those without one. It is also called as double-eyelid surgery. A double eyelid makes it easier for patients to apply make-up. It also gives a fuller appearance to the eyes. Absence of eyelid crease can be unilateral or bilateral. This procedure is carried out under local anesthesia and patients can leave soon after the procedure.
