LEUKODERMA (WHITE PATCHES)

Vitiligo treated with split thickness skin graft | before and after
Leukoderma is an acquired loss of pigmentation of the skin. This results in pale or white looking patches over skin and/ or mucosa. It may be associated with social inhibition and feelings of embarrassment in the affected individuals.

What causes leukoderma?
It can be secondary to conditions such as burns, injections, and certain procedures. In many cases, the exact cause is not known.

What are the treatment options in case of leukoderma?
These include medical and surgical management. Medical treatment is carried out under the supervision of a dermatologist. In some cases, patients may opt for camouflage with cosmetics.

What are the indications for surgical treatment?
This is indicated in cases of,
  1. Stable leukoderma with no change in appearance for more than six months.
  2. Cases refractory to medical management.
You will need a clearance form a dermatologist before surgical treatment.

What are the surgical treatment options?
These include,
1. Sheet skin grafting: Skin graft is obtained from an area with normal pigmentation. The melanocytes from the graft get transferred to the recipient area.
2. Putty grafting: Thin sheets of split thickness skin grafts are applied to the recipient area as a paste.

What are the benefits of undergoing surgical treatment for leukoderma?
It improves the pigmentation and results in better appearance. This also helps improve self-confidence and self-esteem.
