FACIAL REJUVENATION PROCEDURES

Aging refers to the biological process of growing older. As we grow older there are certain changes which occur in our tissues which contribute to the aged appearance. Facial rejuvenation procedures help in reversing many of these signs of aging. They differ in the level of invasiveness and vary from non-surgical to surgical options.

What are the changes associated with facial aging?
These involve almost all the tissues of our face. They include:
  1. Skin: Reduced thickness and greater laxity.
  2. Fat: Volume loss
  3. Ligaments: Increased laxity
  4. Bone: Resorption
Together they contribute to the aged appearance. There is descent of the soft tissues and reversal of the 'inverted egg' shape of youth. The highlights associated with youth is lost. There is an absence of smooth transition from one part of the face to another. For example, the concavity near the eyelids continues into the fullness of the malar region in a young individual. As we age, there is an abruptness in the transition from one sub-unit of the face to another.

What are the types of facial rejuvenation procedures?
Depending upon there invasiveness they are non-surgical or surgical options. Surgical treatments are more invasive and give rise to more longstanding improvement. They act by repositioning the various components of the face such that it leads to better overall balance and harmony. Nonsurgical treatment options mainly target the skin and associated structures.

What are the non-surgical options for facial rejuvenation?
The non-surgical options include:
  1. Botulinum toxin (Botox) injections
  2. Dermal filler injections
  3. Chemical peels
  4. Laser resurfacing
  5. PRP treatments
  6. Creams
They lead to reversal of changes in skin such as, wrinkles, furrows and textural changes.

What are the surgical options?
These include the following:
  1. Brow lift
  2. Blepharoplasty (eyelid correction)
  3. Face lift
  4. Neck lift
  5. Fat injections

How does one choose a facial rejuvenation technique?
The selection of a technique depends on various factors like, expectations of the individual, findings on physical examination, the presence of co-morbidity or risk factors and expected downtime. A consultation is important to assess these parameters and discuss the benefits and risks associated with these procedures.

What are the benefits of the facial rejuvenation procedures?
Often, the changes as a result of aging is equated with sadness and exhaustion. The improvement in appearance with these procedures leads to more harmony and gives rise to a more rested look.

What can prevent the onset of signs of aging?
Some of these habits go a long way to decrease the onset of signs of
aging. They include:
  1. Healthy nutritious diet
  2. Regular exercise
  3. Use of sunscreen
  4. Sun protection
  5. Avoidance of smoking
